 Camp Kemo

The challenges created by cancer place tremendous strain on even the strongest families. Marital difficulties, depression, sibling behavioral problems, financial concerns, and feelings of hopelessness, despair, and guilt are not uncommon. For this reason, we offer a variety of programs and services designed to educate, inspire, and support your entire family so that life is more manageable and enjoyable. We assess your family's coping skills, financial resources, and family dynamics to help our staff understand your special needs. We offer counseling sessions and support groups, and many programs that are funded entirely by community donations.

Simple Pleasures – Who likes to be poked and prodded, stuck and stitched? The answer, of course, is no one. To make things easier for your child, many treatment rooms have televisions, movies and video games; playrooms have plenty of puzzles, games and toys. One of our most popular pleasures is the Toy Box. Children who cooperate with physicians and nurses earn coupons that they can trade for prizes from the box. Not surprisingly, this seems to provide just the right motivation for some!

Camp Kemo is a week-long summer camp for patients ages 5–18 and their siblings. Staffed by our physicians, nurses and volunteers, Camp Kemo allows campers to swim, boat, hike, and simply be children. The fun times at camp lay important groundwork for future treatment as participants learn to trust, respect, and relate to one another.

Lasting Impressions is a group for patients ages 13–19, dealing with adolescence as well as life-threatening disease. Your child receives invaluable peer support during this critical time. Regular retreats may be as simple as dinner and a movie or as exciting as a trip to Atlanta or Washington, DC. Wherever they go, members make a point to reach out to other teens with cancer.

Family Weekend is held in the fall for the families of newly diagnosed patients. While education is a primary goal, the weekend inspires friendships between families facing similar challenges.

Siblings Day is an opportunity for brothers and sisters to tour the Center, ask questions, and feel included in their sibling's care.

School Re-entry Program reduces the impact of cancer treatment on your child's classroom performance and helps pave the road for educational success.

Lunch & Learn provides educational sessions on topics such as discipline, dealing with the school, taking care of your other children, and handling your own stress.

Our services address all phases of life, including the terminal phase of a child's illness. A bereavement program covers all facets of grief, and counseling and support groups are available for all family members.

Camp New Horizons – to help children through the grieving process, brothers and sisters who have lost a sibling may attend this weekend bereavement camp.
