| Approach to Care |

When your child gets a diagnosis of cancer or a serious blood disorder, it affects your entire family. Recognizing this fact, our team approach to care is structured to consider not only your sick child, but also you, your other children, and all significant family members.
Communication is a centerpiece of our approach to care. Once the diagnosis is made and a treatment plan is devised, your child's physician meets privately with you to discuss your child's condition, the proposed therapy, and the risks and alternatives. You get a handbook that explains treatments and side effects, common terms, available support services, and details on the Center. Our physicians maintain constant contact with you to share your child's condition and progress. They are available any time to discuss your child and give advice on laboratory or physical findings. If you request a consultation, we arrange it immediately. To keep your family doctor or referring physician involved as an integral member of the care team, we regularly provide updates on your child by telephone and written communication.
Our nurses serve as an important link, working closely with your family every step of the way, educating, counseling, explaining treatments and possible side effects, and at times, simply listening and giving comfort. Our nurses continue to provide assistance by telephone, answering questions and setting up appointments.
There is no denying that every day brings struggles, yet every day can also bring causes for celebration: a brilliant smile, a successful round of chemotherapy, a positive lab report. Our staff understands children and how to work and play with them. Kites on the walls, colorful murals, silly neckties, slinkies and other toys create a child-friendly environment that is enriched by a pleasant staff. Arts and crafts, music and games shared by a child-life specialist ease the sensitive emotions of your child, which helps comfort you too.
Most families appreciate the fact that all procedures, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are performed at one location, Children's Hospital. Whether treatment is done on an inpatient or outpatient basis, everything is easy to find. If transportation is an issue for you, we provide assistance. If you live out-of-town, you can take advantage of the neighboring Ronald McDonald House in the event of an overnight stay.
